Wow this place is a gem you must visit
The staff is always making sure that you feel good about your stay.
We stayed for 8 days and everyday was a top notch experience.
1-The Rooms are always clean every morning by cleaning crew.
2- the restaurant food is really delicious and staff is very friendly, The buffet food was always fresh and hot. Joselito is the man
3- the animation team is always making your stay fun CHOCO te amo mi amor 🫶🏼 ice-cream and roba la gallina are always making the guess feel welcome at the pool with the great supervisors Damaris and Hazel.
4- lobby Bar staff by pool 2 are the best mi amiga Rafaela, Christine (pregnant girl) and the rest of the team work around bar helping everyone get their drinks quick.
5- the Premium team was always making sure our stay was pleasant at the resort.
This place makes your days fun with all the activities from your start of your day.
6- the lobby actives are fun at night follow by the theater show.
7- Pool 2 outside bar staff and Manuela are the best
always making sure we had cold drinks 🫶🏼🍻🇩🇴

We booked this location for 14 days. Our dresser was broken in the room they gave us which would have been lovely as it had a quiet garden view. They moved us to a room overlooking the noisy (from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m) activity pool which spoiled any peace and quiet (we are a young 80 year's old). The plumber had to be called twice due to a non-flushing toilet and on the 3rd maintenance call, they replaced the toilet. Outside the grounds were beautiful and very well kept and we loved the jacuzzi pool and the staff was wonderful in any place we went. No complaints about the food from the buffet restaurant to the specialty restaurants. All was delicious. The ocean walk was lovely and you do have to go down to either ocean or pools early to get your chair reserved with a towel or they are gone by 10 a.m. I think next Caribbean holiday we go on it would be to a smaller resort and perhaps not near the activities. But if you are young and wanting those activities, you will enjoy it.

We just returned from a 7 day stay on December 14, 2025. We've stayed at this hotel at least 6 times since 1995 with several different hotel chains. Over time this architecturally beautiful hotel was slowly losing it's charm. That said the Barcelo hotel chain has taken over the Occidental and I saw a remarkable improvement since my last stay 3 years ago. Rooms are old but very clean and comfortable. All public restrooms are also very clean. The grounds are superbly maintained and are absolutely gorgeous. The hotel's beach is hands down the most beautiful beach of all the neighboring hotels. I'd like to thank Anna our friendly and attentive waitress at the main bar. Vanesa, our maid for keeping our room so clean. Carmelo, for a few good bottles of wine including his professional service. Manuela and Juan at the Mirador pool bar for friendly and fast service. And finally but not least Martires at the front desk check in. Martires is friendly and courteous. We appreciated the effort he made to give us a room with a view of the pool and beach.

We just returned yesterday from Occidental Caribe. Overall we had a great time. We seen some nasty reviews on here before we left and I figured I would leave an honest review. I will make a pros and cons list.
Pros
1) As it is an older resort, the architecture and design of the hotel is amazing
2) Pools and landscape is beautiful, we spent alot of time at the swim up bar pool. The bar staff over there were second to none. Carolina and David are the best.
3) The beach area is also well looked after and beautiful.
4) The pizza place upstairs from the snack bar was awsome but very busy and very long wait times.
5) The wifi in the resort and rooms are the best we've had at any resort.
Cons
1) Rooms are outdated, room services needs some attention. Especially the bathrooms, our tub was painted with a paint brush. Our floors looked like they were mopped with dirty mop water. I never walked barefoot in the room. Also air quality and AC were not that great. But I will say the beds were comfortable. Our daughters arm got electrified when she tried to plug the TV in the wall plug.
2) The staff at coffee bar next to the buffet room were horrible. Just like they didn't want to be there. The other bar further down the hallway were better but still not great. Except for Ana, and an older guy, I forget his name. They were good.
2) The buffet food was your typical DR food, I've had better but I also had worst. A good bunch in our group had diarrhea at some point through the week.
3) Language barrier was too much, most staff dont understand a lick of English.
Overall we enjoyed our stay. I understand that the Barcelo group just took this over 3 years ago and are gradually making positive changes. Hopefully they keep making necessary renovations and changes. This resort has so much potential.

Even though the resort is a bit old, it was very well maintained. The property is beautiful with two large pools and the beach front is always clean and sargassum free, I was very impressed by that. There are plenty of chairs by the pool and beach, no need to stress about that. Food was good. If I could point out something I wish was a little better, I'd have to say that the staff needs to have some customer service training. I loved my stay there.
