Want Winter Sun? Consider the Caribbean

It’s that time of year again, the big coat is well and truly out of the wardrobe and we’re all shivering our way to work in the dark. Yes, the good old British winter has smacked us all squarely in the face with its frosty winds and icy pavements, and summer seems like a distant memory.

But it’s not all bad. There are plenty of places in the world that enjoy year-round warm temperatures, including the heavenly islands of the Caribbean. But why should you swap your scarf for your swimwear and jet off to the West Indies? Here are five reasons why the Caribbean is the perfect destination for your winter sun break.

Life’s a beach… all year round!

It’s no secret that the Caribbean islands boast some of the most beautiful beaches on earth. Barbados is located in the Lesser Antilles, and is home to Crane Beach and those famous postcard-perfect pink tinged sands. Families with young children will be more suited to Mullins Beach, located on the west coast of the island. Here you’ll find calm, clear waters - perfect for safe swimming and paddling.

To the southwest of Barbados lies the smaller island of Tobago - a serious contender to Barbados in the beach stakes. The golden sands of Englishman’s Bay are a sharp contrast to the emerald waters and luscious forests either side of the beach, with the clear ocean being the perfect place to don your snorkel and explore life beneath the surface.

Head north to the Greater Antilles and explore the pristine white sands of Jamaica. If you’re looking for a lively stretch of coastline, where you can spend the whole day, it has to be Negril Beach. Here you can relax and watch the turquoise waters lap against the beach, or discover a wide variety of beachside bars and cafes. You’ll also catch a glimpse of arguably the best sunsets on the island.

Dance the night away!

The Caribbean is home to some of the best nightlife in the world, with reggae bars, late night beach shacks and cocktail clubs open until the early hours. Head to the lively island of Jamaica and experience a place that comes alive when the sun goes down. There’s an array of live music venues, chilled-out beach bars and cool cafes open late - where you can kick back and relax to the sound of that famous Jamaican rhythm.

East of Jamaica lies the Dominican Republic, where you’ll discover a bustling nightlife that suits all tastes. Watch the sunset over the water at a chilled out beach hut, or dance until dawn at one of the many nightclubs in Santo Domingo - one thing’s for sure though, the nightlife in the Dominican Republic is second-to-none.

Bustling cities and fascinating heritage

The Caribbean’s not all about the coastline. Travel further inwards and discover some of the most interesting cities in the world. The bustling city of Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados, and has a fascinating heritage. Explore the winding streets and discover the colonial heritage and architecture that’s been left over from British rule.

Jamaica is home to the world-famous Kingston - the capital located on the southwest coast of the island. Take a guided tour to the Bob Marley museum, situated in the singer’s former home, or head off on a Jamaican music history tour of the city that started it all.
