Activities

Split holidays are packed full of exciting things to do. The city boasts an enviable list of activities and must-see attractions. We’ve listed our favourites below:

Visit Diocletian’s Palace

Split’s Diocletian’s Palace fortress is one of Croatia’s most famous sights. Built back in the Middle Ages, the expansive district is made up of narrow streets and walkways that include bars, cafes and local shops, as well as grand residences. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The area combines history and modern living in this vast complex, which centres around the grand marble and white stone palace.

Museums and galleries

Split’s many museums give a fantastic account of the city’s vast history. You’ll find many of these in the Diocletian Palace grounds, as well as spread around Split. We recommend a trip to the Split City Museums, which houses a vast selection of astounding artefacts and historic relics.

Take a hike up Marjan

Marjan is the name of the verdant hill that overlooks the whole of Split. This scenic area is filled with wonderful parks and green spaces. Here you’ll find tennis courts, forests and a Zoo for the little ones!

Water sports

If you’re looking for a fun and exciting activity, we recommend taking part in some of the many water sports on offer. Jet skiing, parasailing and surfing are just a few of the many exciting pursuits available.

Beaches

Split occupies a prime stretch on the sun-soaked Dalmatian Coast, where golden sands and azure waters meet. You’ll find hidden coves and busier tourist spots along the coast, which boast beautiful backdrops and surrounding scenery.

Eating out

Split is home to a number of fantastic bars and restaurants, where you’ll find sumptuous local cuisine and unique dishes. Croatia’s cuisine is heavily influenced by both Italian and Greek dishes, so expect hearty tomato and meat-based dishes and plenty of pasta.

Weather

By now, you might be wondering what to expect from the weather in Split. The Croatian city enjoys wonderfully hot summers, which last from May to September. Winter, much like a lot of Central Europe, enjoys modest temperatures, making it more suited to a city break.

  • In January and February, Split experiences its coldest weather with temperatures averaging around 8 degrees Celsius. Many of Split’s attractions stay open throughout the year, so it’s still worth visiting for a winter city break.
  • In March and April, Split begins to warm up with the advent of spring. The temperature becomes mild and increases to around 12°C. But that’s just an average, some sunny days can make it to 15°C.
  • In May, the first signs of summer can be felt in Split. 18°C is common for this time of year but most days can hit the early 20s.
  • In June, Split enjoys even more sunshine and hot weather with temperatures starting at around 21°C and increasing throughout the month. Highs of 26°C have been recorded so pack plenty of sun cream.
  • There’s no doubting that July and August are Split’s hottest months by a long mile. Average temperatures of 25°C make the city a must for sun-seekers, although you’re more likely to find most people on the beach! Not hot enough? Some days can even hit 30°C!
  • In September, Split steadily cools down ever so slightly. Summer is still very much apparent though, with temperatures averaging in the low 20s and sunshine still prevalent.
  • In October, Split returns to more mild weather with temperatures of 16 degrees. While it may not be as hot, this is still a great time to visit Split, especially if you prefer holidaying outside of the summer.
  • In November and December, Split returns to colder spells of around 12 degrees. Winter is much quieter in Split, which means you can avoid the crowds and get a brilliant deal on a late holiday.
